En anteriores editoriales hemos venido tratando un asunto que preocupa de forma notable al medio artístico español: la proyección del arte de este país. Nos gustaría llamar la atención esta vez sobre el papel que desempeñan los medios de comunicación, pues son éstos, indudablemente, los que difunden las iniciativas y propuestas artísticas, dirigiéndose a un público internacional cada vez más interconectado.

Pero dentro de las preocupaciones de los medios generalistas no están las de detectar tendencias y analizar los fenómenos artísticos. Su capacidad crítica es limitada en este campo, y atiende al interés de las masas, reduciendo lo relativo al arte plástico a un ámbito asimilado al del espectáculo. Son, pues, los medios especializados los que "seleccionan" lo que tiene interés de entre el maremágnum que es hoy la oferta de arte contemporáneo, iniciando el proceso de difusión de estilos y corrientes artísticas que pronto será seguido por los medios masivos.

Las revistas especializadas son el referente por excelencia, en el ámbito del arte como en tantos otros, para todo el que desee discriminar lo que importa o pretenda conocer los mecanismos que explican determinados fenómenos en un campo específico. Observar, registrar y analizar las manifestaciones artísticas, o de lo artístico, es lo que justifica la existencia de la revista especializada en arte; y de su capacidad para extraer lo más relevante de la inflacionada oferta artística depende su prestigio. La revista de arte de calidad se convierte pronto en una fuente primaria para el estudio del arte contemporáneo y de las ideas que lo sustentan. Our previous editorials addressed an issue that worries the Spanish artistic scene: the promotion of the art made in our country. On this occasion, we would like to underline the role played by the media, since they are, unquestionably, behind the promotion of artistic initiatives and proposals, and reach out to an international public that is evermore interconnected.

However, the general media are not there to spy out trends and analyse artistic phenomena. Their critical capacity in this field is limited, and is guided by the masses, reducing artistic articles to a sphere akin to the entertainment industry. Therefore, it is up to the specialised media to "select" interesting and noteworthy proposals among the mountain of present-day offers of contemporary art, triggering the promotion of the artistic styles and trends that will soon be picked up by the mass media.

Specialised magazines are the quintessential reference literature, both in art and in so many other sectors, for anyone wanting to discriminate between what is important or aiming to grasp the mechanisms that explain certain phenomena in a specific field. Observing, investigating and analysing artistic manifestations, or manifestations of art, is what justifies the existence of the specialised art magazine, and its prestige depends on its ability to extract the most relevant elements from the inflated artistic offer. A high quality art magazine soon becomes the premier source for the analysis of contemporary art and the ideas it is based on. Its impact lives on in time and space, since its contents are studied and analysed well beyond the geographical location in which they appear -exceeding the mere informative gesture that focuses on a local audience, as is the case of the mass media, which are constrained by national interests and subject to the unquestionable principle of what is newsworthy.

Thus, the specialised art magazine is crucial to promoting the impact of the cultural action and the foreign promotion of the art made in a specific country. Consequently, in order to promote Spanish art abroad, it is indispensable to attract the attention of the specialised media. Having a specialised art magazine that carries pieces on local art, as in Spain's case, is an undisputable advantage, given that all over the world specialised magazines are the sources that specialists, collectors and art enthusiasts turn to in search of the information they require about art from a specific area.
